The Arrest
Then the band and the captain and the officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound Him.
John 18:12Have you ever had a prisoner come and visit you at home whilst serving his sentence? Did a murderer pitch up at your door, free and smiling, to have a cup of tea with you? Of course not. Because prisoners stay behind bars. Prisoners do not get to enjoy a nice life outside. Prisoners are denied their rights and they have to live according to the guards that have the rule over them.
And if you want to release a prisoner, you need to go to prison. You cannot sit at home and release a prisoner. Somebody has to intercede for that prisoner. Somebody needs to open the door for the prisoner to get out.
The arrest of Jesus was more than just a bunch of guards carrying Jesus away. The arrest brought Jesus straight into the prison. Jesus arrest brought Him face-to-face with superiors that He would have to overcome so that you and I can be set free.
We were all prisoners once upon a time and some of us today are still prisoners. Some are prisoners to sickness, others to financial woes, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, anger; some still live in sin as a result, sin has the rule over that person. And as long as you are a prisoner you cannot do what you want to do, but you need to obey that which has the rule over you. For example, you may hate smoking but you still find yourself doing it. Why? Because the spirit of addiction is your master. He has the rule over you.
Today, know that Jesus has set you free. Jesus took on prisoner clothes just for you. Isaiah 53 says, "He was numbered with the transgressors, and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors." Jesus overcame your tormentors for you. Jesus was locked behind spiritual bars so that He could intercede for you. When He was in prison He took on rulers and principalities. But ... moreover ... HE CAME OUT VICTORIOUS.
