Sin Against Who?

There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Genesis 39:9

Have you ever thought about who you are sinning against when you do sin? When you tell the odd white lie, are you sinning against the person you are lying to? Are you sinning against yourself perhaps?

Or when you're on the verge of committing adultery, do you tell yourself, "I could never do that to my spouse." Well, Joseph had a different perception to the way he conducted his life.

Everything he did revolved around God. When he was thrown into the pit he waited for the LORD to deliver him. When he was a slave he still worshipped God. And when he had the perfect opportunity to sin, his first thought was, "How can I sin against my God?"

Who do you sin against? To answer this question, you need to know where your love lies. If you love your spouse you would say, "I cannot sin against my spouse." Such a response would tell me that you love your spouse. When you love somebody you do not want to hurt that person.

Do you love God? If you do, should you not then be striving to live a holy life? Should you not continue to persevere to put sin away from you and to be holy and acceptable unto your Saviour and Father? This is what the love of God should be doing in your life. Transforming and renewing you.

If you're finding it easier to sin it probably means that you're drawing further away from God and losing the first love you had for Him. And if that is the case, God is looking for your heart of repentance and He promises to draw closer to you.

It is easy to sin. Sin is pleasurable to the flesh. If it wasn't, nobody would sin. But your love towards God is manifested when you deny sin, take up your cross and follow Him.
