A Lesson on David and Goliath

So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.

1 Samuel 17:50

Here are a few lessons on the valiant story of David and Goliath:

1. To overcome your giant, first identify your giant. "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" It could be smoking, or drinking, a spirit of poverty, or cancer —what is stopping you from serving God with all your might and with all your strength?

2. Expect discouragement — not only from your giant, but from those who you think are on your side. Saul told David, "Thou art not able to go against the Philistine." Goliath told David, "Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air." His own brother discouraged him. Expect discouragement, but do not dwell on it.

3. Know who you are. Remind yourself of the battles that Christ has won for you already. Encourage yourself to take on the giant, "Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear." What are your testimonies that brought you to take on this giant?

4. Do not use somebody elses armour. The Lord has given YOU the measure of faith to move YOUR mountains. Your brothers level of faith may not be sufficient to overcome your giant. And God has placed that giant in your life for a reason ... for YOU to be more than a conqueror in Christ.

5. Next, get yourself equipped. God has given you spiritual armour to use in battle (Ephesians 6). Arm yourself with Gods armour and weapons every time you go into battle. Find verses in the Word of God that encourage the victory over your Goliath.

6. Fight in the name of Jesus. His name is above all names. You cannot fight the battle on your own.
