Looks Can Be Deceiving

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, ... even as the garden of the LORD. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east.

Genesis 13:10 to 11

Abrams servants and Lots servants got into a quarrel about whose land belonged to whom. Both sides had an overabundance of cattle but not enough grazing ground. As a result, and to avoid strife amongst the servants, Abram told Lot to choose the land he wanted to own and Abram would go in the opposite direction.

Well, Lot looked upon the land, and seeing that the Jordan was well- watered and appeared as "the garden of the LORD," he headed east and pitched camp facing Sodom. It wasn't long before Abram had to go running to save Lot from the enemys camp, then plead with God to save Lot when Sodom and Gomorrah was going to be destroyed.

You see, not everything that comes our way is a good and delightful thing unto the Lord. We all are tempted and we all will continue to be tempted by the Deceiver. The key, though, to overcoming temptation is to stay focused on the Word of God.

Satan knows your weak points — and he will keep you in bondage for years by attacking those weak points. He knows what "tickles your fancy." And, like Eve, he will make it look "good for food, and pleasant to the eyes."

Derek Prince writes this of temptation, "We make the most tragic mistakes. We are like a person who is legally heir to a vast fortune, but we sell off our entire inheritance for something incomparably less valuable: a night of sex, a joint of marijuana, a drunken party, a crooked financial scheme. Or we may value ourselves a little higher, perhaps seeking some prestigious position. Yet for all its prestige, it does not compare to the value of our inheritance." Is it worth giving up an eternal inheritance for a short-term thrill?
