Cast Thy Burdens
Cast thy burdens upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22How good are you at carrying burdens? I remember growing up and my dad would buy a ten kilogram packet of dog food. I would run for this item to take inside so I could see how strong I was. But most times I had to stop half way and take a break. And I dare not drag it on the floor lest I cause more damage.
That is a lot like how we are today. We have this habit of trying to carry our own burdens and weights. Some even anxiously run to where help is needed, and end up carrying burdens that don't even belong to them. I am so glad that the furthest distance I need to cover to reach the drop-off zone is from my knees to the floor.
That's correct. A burden is not something God intended us to carry. A burden is grievous, wearisome and depressive — completely opposite to Gods nature. And who can do a better job of turning your burdens into blessings than the God who turns your mourning into dancing and your sorrow into joy?
Carrying your own burdens means you need to take unnecessary stops; stops that have a sole purpose of slowing you down. And that's what burdens do — they slow down your walk with Christ. And if you stop long enough, you may never reach the destination God has planned for you.
But when you cast your burdens upon the Lord, He sustains you. He carries you through. Isn't it amazing that David says, "he shall sustain thee"? He doesn't say a word about the burden after you cast it upon the Lord. Instead, the focus shifts directly back to you and Gods ability to carry you.
Be anxious for nothing, the Bible says, but let your requests be made known unto God with thanksgiving in prayer and supplication. Cast your cares upon the Lord, and allow Him to sustain you. He shall not allow you to slip or be overcome.
