Redeem the Time

See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5:15 to 16

Eighty six thousand four hundred seconds in a day. Every second instantly passing away and, before you realize it, another day has gone. Forty years later, and you're sitting, grandchildren on your lap, telling them the glorious tales of days gone by. And then you think to yourself, "There was so much I never got to accomplish in life. So much I wanted to do, but I never had the time."

Thayer defined "redeeming the time" as a decision to "make wise and sacred use of every opportunity for doing good, so that zeal and well doing are as it were the purchase money by which we make the time our own." In other words, treat time as if it were money that could be put to good use.

Seize the day. You need to seize every moment, every second of the day. In everything that happens throughout the day, from the time you arise in the morning to the time you lay your head to rest, you need to look for opportunity.

Seize the day. You need to get up in the morning with a clear vision of what you are going to accomplish today. There is no time for procrastination and the "Ill do it later" attitude.

If you ever want to know what one millisecond is worth, ask the runner who came out in second place. One second could be worth the world to a person dying of a terminal disease right now. One second is enough time to save a child from falling, to save an adult from eternal damnation, to keep you moving another step.

And when you redeem your time, spend it wisely. Look for the mountaintop in every valley, the rainbow in every storm, the light at the end of every tunnel. Make a decision to rejoice. Reach out and seize every moment. Forty years from today, you want your grandchildren to hear of your victories, never your regrets.
