The Sword of the Lord

And they said unto Joshua, Truly the Lord hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.

Joshua 2:24

Isn't it good to know that you hold the incorruptible, ever-living Word of God in your hands? Have you ever questioned the authority of Gods Word? Or, even more importantly, have you ever used the Word of God in the circumstances you are facing right now? In John 1:1 we discover that the Word existed from the very beginning. You hold the most powerful, awesome, never-changing, Spirit-inspired Book in your hands.

Psalm 138:2 says that God has magnified His Word above His name. One student, named Kennicott, translated this verse as saying, "He preferred faithfulness to His promise to the attribute of His power." Yes, God is an awesome and powerful God, but He is also true to His Word. God honours His Word; if He says that He will be there with you through the valley of the shadow of death, stand on His Word, which God will never dishonour.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 24:35 that, "Heaven and earth may pass away, but my words shall not pass away." In Psalm 119:160, David exclaims, "Thy Word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever." Gods Word is eternal and unchanging. God says, "the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the Word of God shall stand for ever."

In Ephesians 6:17, Paul commands us to take the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Our Bibles are sharper than any two-edged sword; the Bible, Gods Word spoken to us, is quick and alive. The Bible has a "living" power — it is energetic and active.

The Word of God has the power to consume beasts and overthrow all the works of the enemy. And yet, it is gentle enough to bring a repentant man to salvation. The Word can give love to the lonely, healing to the sick, victory to the defeated, encouragement and comfort to the sorrowful, strength to the weary, and hope to the hopeless.
