Silence
... a time to mend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.
Ecclesiastes 3:7How long can you be still for? Are you able to just sit and listen? Have you ever been to a quiet, serene place and just sat quietly to enjoy the sounds of nature around you? We get so pre-occupied with the business of life that our ears are accustomed to hearing vulgar words, unreasonable demands, the sound of the rushing vehicles flying past us, the noise of machinery, and the list goes on and on. But do you take time out to enjoy the melodious sound of stillness and peace and quiet?
With the world in such a rush today we hurry God too. "LORD, I need to get to the office now, so I will be still and know that you are God when I get home later. Or, if you want to talk to me now, I have five minutes to wait on you."
To be silent, one must exercise patience. And patience is indeed a virtue. When you find yourself completing sentences for others or jumping in half-way and not giving people the opportunity to speak , know that you are being impatient. And that is not what the Word teaches. The Word wants you to develop that fruit of the Holy Spirit called patience.
Practice to be still in your life. Go home from work and, instead of turning on the television, leave the TV off and just sit and be still. Calm your mind, relax, rest your weary body. And as you rest and as you remain silent, allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you.
Give the Holy Spirit that divine opportunity to fill you up with refreshing, living waters. Be still and let God just work in your life. Rest and let the Holy Spirit renew your mind; let that water flow through you so that when next you have to go out, out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water.
