The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth
Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:5The world wants you to believe that if you are meek, you are weak. The commentator Barnes defined meekness as "patience in the reception of injuries. It is neither meanness nor a surrender of our rights, nor cowardice; but it is the opposite of sudden anger, of malice, of long-harboured vengeance." Websters dictionary defines meekness as, "mild of temper, soft, gentle, humble, not easily provoked or irritated."
When you feel the world is rising up against you, and the trials you are going through seem to overtake you, do you remain patient? Are you able to wait for God to deliver you? Or do you lose your temper? Do you get angry with God or with man?
Are you easily provoked? Or are you meek? When people swear at you and attack you do you retaliate or do you humble yourself and turn the other cheek? Jesus said, "If a man takes your coat give him your cloke also."
There are two things about meek people. For one, meek people are blessed; they find favour in Gods eyes, they prosper in whatsoever they put their hands to do. Second, meek people inherit the earth. Its not the poor or they that mourn that receive this inheritance. It is the humble, patient, self- controlled, meek people that inherit the earth.
How do you cultivate a spirit of meekness? Well, meekness cannot be obtained without drawing closer to the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that produces the fruit of patience in your life. He also produces fruits of meekness and self-control. These are all fruits — all results of being filled with the Holy Spirit.
"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; that ye may be children of your Father which is in Heaven: for He maketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust."
