The Mediator Between God and Men

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

1 Timothy 2:5 and 6

One of the key words in the verses above is the word, "mediator." Because a mediator is not a lawyer! Many lawyers have bad reputations. And most lawyers lie and have ulterior motives. But a mediator is a person who has your interests at heart. He does not lie about the situation, but instead protects you and covers you, and aims to reconcile rather than divide. God knows we live sinful lives. The Psalmist David asked God not to hide His face because of his iniquities.

Sin separates us from God. But Jesus still reconciles us. Through the blood of Jesus and through the ultimate price paid on the cross, Jesus became the Lamb of God that would reconcile all men to God. The Bible says that when Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the temple that separated the average man from God was torn in two, giving you and I access to the Holy of Holies — the very presence of God. Jesus is indeed our mediator.

This verse also tells us that there is only one mediator — and that is the man Christ Jesus. Not Peter, nor Paul; not Mary nor her cousin Elizabeth; not any person you can think of. It is only the name of Jesus that can set you free. It is only the name of Jesus that can guarantee you victory in your life.

Finally, the verse tells us that Jesus gave Himself a ransom for all. A ransom is the price you need to pay to redeem somebody. Webster defines the word as, "that which buys the release of a prisoner or captive, or of captured property, and restores the one to liberty and the other to the original owner."

Jesus made His ministry clear when He came to earth, "I come to set the captives free." And this He did. He became poor so that you can be made rich. He took on your infirmities so that you could enjoy a life free of sickness and disease. He took on your garments of sin so that you could become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Is your trust in the true Mediator?
