Doers of the Word

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

James 1:22

James compares the hearer to a man who beholds himself in the mirror, and then goes his way and forgets what he looks like. Jesus says that the hearer of the Word is like the seed that fell on stony ground. They love having their ears tickled by the Word, but the minute tribulation comes to help them become a doer, they get scorched and are "withered away."

What are you being fed? Are you being fed the "niceties" of life — you know, all the verses about being a conqueror, about having victory, and about destroying the works of the enemy? Yes, its good to encourage people. But do you know who the enemy is? Do you know what to do when the enemy does come against you like a flood? Will you be able to stand like Paul asks in Ephesians 6? Its great knowing that God has equipped the saints with His armour, but how many of us apply that armour every morning?

Are you a doer of the Word? Proverbs 1:7 says, "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." Knowledge is information, the power of knowing something. A tomato is a red fruit, and not a vegetable.

Wisdom, on the other hand, is the application or correct use of knowledge. I know a tomato is a fruit but wisdom will tell me that I cannot put a tomato into a fruit salad. Wisdom is all about applying the Word of God into your life.

You can know every verse in the Bible, but if you are not applying this knowledge, Solomon likens you to a fool. Wisdom is your guarantee to victory over the enemy. That is why Satan comes quickly to steal the Word from you — when you apply the Word in your life, you will say unto the mountains, "Be thou removed and be cast into the sea," and those mountains will obey you.
