A Lesson on Psalm 1
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psalm 1:1Psalm 1 teaches that a righteous man does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly. Quite simply, do not take advice from an ungodly person. So many of us find solace in ungodly friends, the stars, astrologers, psychiatrists, and the list goes on. I hate it when believers say, "My sister and I are Geminis, that is why we behave the same way."
Such nonsense. There is nothing godly that this ungodly world can offer you and I. If you are walking in Christ there is nothing in this world that you can be associated with. Your counsel must come from the Word of God or those implanted in His Word.
The godly man will not tell you to get a divorce when your marriage is going through a tough time. The godly man will not tell you to commit suicide when you see no way out. The godly man will not tell you to visit sangomas, witchdoctors and psychiatrists when you need help. Godly counsel will draw you closer to God.
Second, don't stand in the way of sinners. Basically, "Don't take a stand or become a servant of sinners. Don't walk with them in their mischief." The Bible does not say stay away from them, but rather do not do what they do. We all have been called for a purpose ... to minister to the ungodly. We cannot minister salvation to them by staying away from them, neither can we minister to them by participating in what they do.
Finally, do not sit in the seat of the scornful. A scornful person is a mocker, somebody who makes fun of others, who talks arrogantly and boasts a lot. Remember that out of your mouth proceeds words of life and death. The Bible says that if you obey this verse, you will be blessed. Blessed means to have Gods favour in your life. What would you prefer? A lifetime of blessings or a minute of worldly pleasure?
